One size does not fit all:
How does your child learn?
As a parent, you noticed early on whether your child was a looker, a listener and talker, or a doer. You also probably noticed whether he liked to learn on his own or with other people.
If your child liked rhyming games and loved you to read to him, he was showing a strength for the auditory. If she liked to draw and copy things, she was showing a strength for visual learning. And if he always wanted to jump in and do things even before you explained everything, he was telling you that he learned by doing—a kinesthetic learner.
Whatever style your child prefers, he or she can become a great learner with motivation and discipline.
We have to teach our kids how to learn. We can’t throw up our hands when they say they can’t focus or they can’t remember. School cannot adjust to every learner, but we can teach every learner how to adjust to school.
Our children will have to be flexible as the enter college and their careers. Knowing how to learn in a variety of settings will make their lives easier.
This month we have pulled together various resources and information to better help you assess and understand your child’s prefered method of learning. We hope you enjoy!
