Our approach is based on sound instructional principles and research. We focus on strengthening skills and confidence, empowering your child to succeed. The success of our students is a direct result of our personal involvement throughout the entire learning process.

What to Expect in a Tutoring Session...

Research has shown that successful tutors and coaches interact with students in three ways:

Direct instruction
The tutor shows the student what to do. Students require different types of direct instruction. Our teachers use strategies appropriate for the student's auditory and visual processing skills, attention and focus levels, and motivation. Our goal is LEARNING; instruction has to produce learning.

Questioning and Reflecting
The tutor listens as the students explain the work they have completed and what they have learned.

Encouraging and Motivating
The tutor celebrates success and keeps the student actively engaged in learning.

What Materials Do We Use?

We have a variety of materials, and we use resources that are on the student's instructional level. Work that does not challenge the student will not help learning progress. Materials that frustrate the learner will dampen motivation. As students master one level of materials, we move them to a higher level. However, we make sure they have a thorough understanding of the concepts.

Often we use the student's homework or textbook, helping the student understand difficult text or problems.

We are educators with over 50 years of combined experience in education.

When we first looked into opening a learning center, we were surprised to find that the popular franchises were not concerned with our background as educators. They claimed that they had a system and materials that anyone could put into place. In our many years in education, we had never encountered one program or one process that worked with every learner.

We had an end in mind when we created our learning center. We wanted every child to leave as an independent and confident learner.

Your child deserves to reach his or her potential. Figuring out how best to get each child there is the heart of our business.

We know that each child needs instruction and practice that fit with his or her learning style, skill level, and motivation. "Programs" are not necessary when we really understand the learner.
We know that because students' needs change as they learn, we must constantly assess where the learner is and what methods and practice materials will move him or her forward.
Unlike many of the corporate tutoring centers, we don’t make guarantees or claim to have a “magic” program. However we do guarantee that everyone at St Johns Learning operates with one end in mind – the success of each and every one of our students.
