What is the Wilson Phonics System?
The Wilson Phonics System was created to help adults with dyslexia. Now, the system is used with students of all ages to help them internalize the sounds and word structures necessary for automatic and accurate decoding and spelling.
Who Created the Wilson Phonics System?
Barbara Wilson, building on the techniques of Orton, Gillingham, and Stillman, created the system that the NICHD(National Institute of Child Health and Human Development) designates as a successfully scientific researched program.
The Wilson Process
Using an interactive, multi-sensory approach, students learn to decode and spell words. We know that students with auditory processing issues need more instruction and practice to master the code of the English language reading/writing system. The Wilson Program requires one-on-one instruction as students move through the 12 Steps. The students need a minimum of two one-hour sessions per week for parts 1-8, and 30 minute sessions for parts 9-12.
Why is Wilson Successful?
Each step practices a different phonetic pattern that students need to understand in order to decode and spell accurately. The repetition and total word construction(instead of isolated rules) provides the practice and feedback the student needs to process and remember.
We Offer Wilson Plus
Students with fluency issues will progress through the Wilson Phonics program along with practice in Leveled Reading texts, sight word practice, vocabulary in context, and writing.
Our teachers also integrate the Wilson system with the phonics instruction the student is receiving at school. Because we have so many materials and resources, we can offer students the amount and kinds of practice that will help them become fluent readers and writers.
